Central Italy suffered heavily, especially in mezzadria (mixed‑crop-farming) zones where vines shared space with grains and olives, making early detection difficult. But southern Italy remained largely untouched for decades. By the time Campania was hit, the solution was well established, but the region still faced the same wrenching choices about what to replant and which native varieties to preserve.
As northern vineyards died, winemakers moved in search of work and stability. Many fled southward or into central Italy, relocating to areas not yet affected. Others traveled abroad, joining French and Spanish estates that still needed labor or technical help. These migrations created new conduits of knowledge: Italian growers learned grafting techniques, cellar hygiene and trellising systems while abroad or from French consultants who arrived during the northern outbreaks. At the same time, Italy’s own nursery expertise began to flourish. By the early 20th century, Italian nurseries were producing grafted vines at scale, experimenting with rootstock combinations suited to the peninsula’s extraordinary range of soils, from the limestone of Puglia to the volcanic tuff of Campania.
French influence was unmistakable. Consultants from Bordeaux and the Rhône arrived in Piedmont and Tuscany, advising growers on grafting, pruning and cellar modernization. Wire‑trained trellises replaced traditional pergola systems in many regions, and grafting became standard practice as Italian growers adopted the same rootstock selection principles developed in France: lime tolerance for calcareous soils, drought resistance for Mediterranean climates, and vigor control for high‑yielding zones. Italy eventually developed its own rootstock breeding programs, but the intellectual foundation was undeniably French.
Replanting decisions were shaped by both necessity and opportunity. During France’s collapse, Italy – especially Puglia and Sicily – became major suppliers of bulk wine to the French market. These southern regions expanded plantings of high‑yielding varieties such as Negroamaro, Primitivo, and Nero d’Avola, producing enormous volumes of wine shipped north to bolster France’s depleted production. The boom was dramatic: Puglia became one of Europe’s largest wine‑producing regions by volume, its reputation tied to quantity rather than quality. But when France recovered and no longer needed Italian bulk wine, the bottom fell out. Puglia and Sicily suffered a painful collapse, leaving behind overproduction, low prices and a legacy of bulk‑wine identity that modern producers have spent decades working to overcome.
Phylloxera also reshaped Italy’s varietal landscape. Some native grapes were nearly lost. Timorasso in Piedmont, once common, retreated to near extinction before its recent revival. In central Italy, numerous local cultivars were abandoned in favor of Trebbiano and Sangiovese, which grafted easily and produced reliably. In the south, the late arrival of phylloxera preserved varieties like Fiano and Greco, but others disappeared as growers restructured vineyards for mechanization or market demand. Italy’s extraordinary diversity, hundreds of native grape varieties, was both a blessing and a vulnerability. The crisis forced growers to choose which varieties were worth saving, and many minor cultivars did not survive the transition.
Politics and regulation played a decisive role in shaping Italy’s response. The country had only recently unified in 1861, and its agricultural policies were fragmented and inconsistent. Regional governments responded differently to the crisis, with some adopting grafting quickly and others resisting due to cost, tradition or skepticism about American rootstocks. In many rural areas, growers lacked access to certified nurseries or technical guidance, slowing the adoption of effective solutions. Early 20th‑century agricultural policies attempted to standardize vine production and encourage modernization, but progress was uneven. Italy’s regional, decentralized political landscape meant that recovery varied dramatically from one province to the next.
Italy’s phylloxera story is ultimately one of endurance and reinvention. The crisis arrived slowly, spread unevenly and forced growers to rethink their vineyards over the course of decades. In the process, Italy absorbed foreign knowledge, developed its own nursery expertise, reshaped its varietal landscape and confronted the consequences of political fragmentation. The vineyards that survived and those that were replanted created the Italy we know today: a mosaic of regions whose identities were forged in a long, complex struggle against a tiny insect that changed the course of European wine.
Italy’s Ungrafted Sanctuaries: Etna & Sardinia
Italy’s most remarkable refuges of ungrafted vines (viti a piede franco) lie in two dramatically different landscapes: the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna and the sandy coasts of Sardinia.
Etna: Volcanic Protection
Porous basalt, pumice, and fractured lava prevent phylloxera from moving through the soil. As a result, century‑old vines of Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Carricante still grow on their original roots on the slopes of Mount Etna in districts like Passopisciaro, Randazzo and Milo. These wines offer volcanic minerality and a rare pre‑phylloxera purity.
Sardinia: Sandy Strongholds
Deep marine sands and granite‑derived soils in Sulcis, Ogliastra and Gallura create natural phylloxera barriers. Ungrafted Carignano, Cannonau and Vermentino thrive here, many on vines exceeding 100 years of age. Their flavors reflect direct root‑to‑soil contact; their wines are saline, textural and intensely Mediterranean.
Etna and Sardinia preserve some of Italy’s last true a piede franco vineyards, living links to pre‑phylloxera Europe. They offer historical continuity and a unique expression of terroir that grafted vines cannot replicate.
